Minutes

  • Digital Citizenship

    • Presentation by Alan Rhees from Weber School District: Safe Technology Utilization and Digital Citizenship Report
      • Web Filtering: iBoss web filters set up at different levels for differing filtering needs (for example, high school anatomy class search vs. kindergarten users)
      • Social Media restrictions (YouTube allowed in Safe Search and Restriction Mode, other media sites mostly blocked for students but some are allowed for teachers if they have educational value)
      • CIPA- monitoring safety (BARK- monitors outgoing messages from students, has already saved lives)
      • Digital Literacy: Technology usage does not equal digital literacy. It must be taught.
      • WSD uses Common Sense Digital Literacy Curriculum (parents can also use this resource to find ratings for video games and movies)
      • Additional Parent Resources: The Art of Screen Time by Anya Kamentz, Digital for Good by Richard Culatta (*highly recommended by Mr. Rhees, focuses on dos not don’ts, learning balance), Be Internet Awesome online game through Google (https://beinternetawesome.withgoogle.com/en_us/families), NetSafe Utah (https://www.netsafeutah.org/) (lists several resources for teachers, parents, and leaders)
      • Using school logins means they get the same filters and Bark systems at home
  • Council Responsibilities: School Safety

    • Kim Vorwaller is the safety specialist at our school. She’s invited Lane Findlay to join us and share expertise about safety measures at school.
      • Review of different types of drills our school has set up (information available in a handout if requested by parents or council members)
      • Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Shelter, Evacuate (our evacuation location is the church on 1000 West)
    • Safety concerns or questions for Lane Findlay (Community Relations Specialist for WSD)
      • Discussion of layers of protection within the school and precautionary measures
      • SafeUT partnership gives students a means to report things safely and anonymously if needed
      • Greatest preventive piece is the school climate and culture
  • Minutes for November: Motion to approve minutes by Alicia Willoughby, seconded by Monica Cameron. Voting unanimous.

    • Alicia Willoughby requested to have a link sent to council members once the drafted notes are posted on the school website by Mr. Ludlow.
    • Need to change the spelling of Sarah Heilig’s name (sorry Sarah!) in previous note minutes
  • Brief overview of RISE data, looking at most vulnerable students. (shows where we are needing extra support; we need to be aware as we go into making our plan for next year)

  • Change date of next meeting from February 16 to the 23rd (Mrs. Dills is at a conference on the 16th). Motion by Mrs. Dills to change the date, seconded by Lacey Boggess. Voting unanimous.
