Minutes

  • Digital Citizenship Presentation

    • Monica Widdison of the Weber School District Digital Teaching and Learning Department
    • Safe Technology Utilization and Digital Citizenship Report
      • The district uses various filtering and monitoring methods to ensure student safety online. This includes web filtering, monitoring search terms, chats, and emails. Filtering of search results and allowing certain social media is based on student grade level and school staff role.
        • In most cases, sites are blocked and a report is generated for the administration. However, if certain terms are recognized that indicate a student is in danger, the principal is notified, and if response is not immediate, notifications go to the district office and eventually to the sheriff's office if necessary.
        • One current monitoring application is Bark. It only monitors activity in the Google Suite of applications. The district is in the process of replacing Bark with another, more robust application. Decision will be made by the WSD Board of Education in an upcoming meeting.
      • WSD is compliant with all Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) laws
      • Digital literacy is being taught in each class each year by the Computer teacher and is based on district approved curriculum from Common Sense Education. This is also a resource for parents. The district is looking to add more digital citizenship curriculum to make teaching these concepts more ongoing.
  • Review March Minutes

  • Videos about Community Councils and their role in school funding as well as changes for the 23/24 school year were shown.

  • Council membership discussion

    • Michelle Hales and Alicia Willoughby submitted their names for a new 2 year term during the call for candidates last spring. No election was necessary since there were enough vacancies.
    • Marina Fowler, who has one year left of her two year term, asked to step down as a Council member due to other obligations. Kathryn Buxton motioned to appoint Julie Trickett as a parent member to complete Marinda’s term. Michelle Hales seconded. All approved. Julie’s term will end with the 2023-2024 school year.
    • Two other parents who each had one year of their term remaining left OSE this year leaving Council openings. Something similar happened last year leading the Council to discuss moving the member election from the spring to the fall.
    • The Council will discuss this and the positions of current members at the next meeting.
  • The 2023-2024 Plan was reviewed.

    • OSE aligned the grade goals and TSSA Plan goals with the Trust Lands Plan to make sure everyone is working toward the same goal.
    • Some of the Trust Lands Plan money was used to purchase Lexia (a reading program) for all grades. Lexia replaced Imagine Learning’s reading program. Imagine Learning’s math program is used for math practice. The kindergarten is using Waterford School’s program which includes reading, math, and science.
  • 2023-2024 meeting schedule was approved. All meetings will be at 4:00 PM in the OSE Conference room. Additional meetings could be added if needed.
