Notes from the Principal

August 6, 2019

Dear Orchard Springs Parents and Families,

Several weeks ago, we sent a letter to you stating that we believed that there was a credible plan in place to finish at least a portion of our new school which would enable us to start the new school year at Orchard Springs. Unfortunately, that will not be the case.

We are extremely disappointed and frustrated with DWA (the general contractor on the job) and their repeated failures to meet deadlines. We are taking appropriate legal steps to address these issues.

It is now clear that we will need to have a temporary back-up plan in place for the beginning of school. This will involve transporting students to nearby schools that have capacity to house different grades for a period of time. We anticipate that this could be anywhere from one to three months. Obviously, we will be pushing hard to minimize as much as possible the time frame for this temporary arrangement. We have met with the principals from North Ogden, Farr West, West Weber, Silver Ridge and Plain City who not only have classroom space available, but have expressed a real desire to welcome and embrace students from our school for a short period of time. While we don’t yet know which grades will be attending these schools, we will communicate that with you very shortly.
The school district will be providing the transportation to these sites. So, children will meet at a central location (to be determined) and bussed to their designated school and returned to that central location at the end of the day. More specific details will be provided as those logistics are arranged.

Once again, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this presents to families. Our commitment is that every child will be with a caring, supportive teacher. One advantage for us this first year is that our class sizes will be quite low (between 18-22). This will allow our teachers to focus on the specific needs of your child. More communication will follow later this week. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Professionally,

Mary Jo Williams
Principal, Orchard Springs Elementary

and

Dr. Jeff Stephens
Superintendent, Weber School District
